Solution to Interface Level Measurement Challenges (GWR)

Introduction

A prominent North American steel manufacturing company, with over a century of industry presence, produces high-quality light gauge steel. Their integrated production capabilities span approximately 2.8 million tons of raw steel annually, catering to sectors such as automotive, construction, energy, defense, and manufacturing.

The company faced significant challenges in reliably measuring the oil/water interface in critical oil tanks. The primary issues included:

Solution

Everest Automation, in collaboration with ABB, provided a solution using ABB’s LWT320 Guided Wave Radar (GWR). The LWT320 was chosen for its superior signal strength in low dielectric oil environments. The company initially trialed the LWT310 GWR against the incumbent Magnetrol and subsequently ordered 22 units of the LWT320 for more challenging applications.

Implementation

The deployment of the LWT320 units was completed smoothly within three days, thanks to the coordinated efforts of ABB and Everest Automation’s field service teams. The integration with local custom panels and the plant’s Distributed Control System (DCS) ensured reliable and safe measurements, preventing any oil discharge into the nearby river and avoiding production shutdowns.

Conclusion

The successful implementation of ABB’s LWT320 GWR provided the steel manufacturer with reliable interface level measurements, enhancing operational safety and efficiency.
